This is page 4 What Are We Doing?                            FALL 2007

First I'll give you a brief overview of the overall grand plan for the next two years. Since we've  sold our house is Sammamish, WA, we're preparing for our departure from the Seattle area in late August. The purpose of our initial voyage in the Puget Sound (and the Vancouver, British Columbia area) will be to get ourselves and the boat into condition for the longer haul in 2008 to the east coast and Boston, MA for the Fall leaf season. On Page 8. you'll see a map of our planned route for both '07 and '08. But now we are on our way, so let's talk about the adventure of 2007.

OK. . .  It is now late-August, it is time to get this cruise under way. We departed Lockhaven Marina in Seattle on Aug 19 to begin our shakedown set of short trips within the waters we know best- Puget Sound.  Our purpose in these jaunts is to get thoroughly acostomed to the Skipper and Mate crew duties we'll share and to wring out any issues, performance expectations, and surprises  ALANUI may have in store for us. It is an understatement to say that we want all surprises to expose themselves
before we venture into the big Pacific in the begining of September.  We'll also assur eourselves that we have the proper ship papers and personal documents in hand for the border crossings and customs requirements next month.

Below is an overview of our tentative schedule and stops in Puget Sound.

HEADING SOUTH

So now that we've shaken out all the bugs n stuff, we're ready to see how we and the boat take to the big sea.

We'll take it slow until we feel comfortable with our new suroundings since our need to be in San Diego by the end of September allows us plenty of time for acquiring our sea-legs.  As it turned out, we may really need the time 'cause the weather has a way of disturbing the best laid plans.

 FUBAR Odyssey

From the planning standpoint, it makes sense to take a small step toward true passagemaking while in the company of experienced sailors who can help show us the way. The FUBAR Odyssey provides just such an opportunity.  For a more detailed explanation of the concept of the FUBAR, go to the following link.

Below is a summay of the dates and ports that comprise the FUBAR Odyssey.  In the Journal page of this (ALANUI) site, you'll find the summary of our experience in navigating the seas near Baja California under the guidance of a great group of experienced passsagemakers.

THE REALLY BIG  PICTURE OF OUR 2007 PLANS FOR THE ADVENTURES OF ALANUI
(With actual dates noted as they were accomplished)

This map puts things in a better perspective.

From Seattle to San Diego is approx 1500 nm with stops along the way.

Dist from Mazatlan to the Panama Canal is approx. 2,700 nm.

East-West distances at these latitudes are over the fat part of Earth.

'Nuff geography for now . . . .

The adventure will continue.
